What is Camp Sonshine?

Camp Sonshine is a Christian Day camp established in Maryland, USA in 1981. Since then Camp Sonshine has been bringing the word of God not only to children in the USA but to children globally. Camp Sonshine International’s vision statement is to bring “God’s love and purpose to children around the world”, including the Baldivis area.

What is the purpose of the camp?

The purpose of Camp Sonshine is to “create fun memories where children and youth experience God’s love.” Camp Sonshine does this through fun activities and meaningful relationships with carefully selected staff who want to make a difference in the life of your child.

What activities will we be doing?

Camp Sonshine is about creating fun memories! We will do this through creative craft activities, sports games, water games, drama activities, counselor planned activities, talent shows, discovery of nature, Bible discovery time and awesome theme days.

Why Camp Sonshine?

Camp Sonshine aims to provide a quality day camp experience for your child so that they can participate in fun activities in a meaningful environment. Camp Sonshine respects all children and families and all are welcome.

The 90 Day Tithe Challenge

The Tithe and the New Covenant

The tithe is a bible word that simply means a tenth. And while in the Old Testament Scriptures there are numerous applications for the tithe, a simple understanding is that tithe means a tenth of a person’s income that is brought to God.

In Malachi chapter 3, the prophet writes about bringing the “whole tithe” into God’s storehouse.

Not all believers are in agreement about whether the tithe is relevant in the new covenant era. And there would be many who understand that the tithe was an old covenant prescription that no longer exists in the current era.

However, Jesus referenced the tithe in teaching on justice, mercy and faithfulness. He commends the Pharisees for tithing, but rebukes them for not exercising justice, mercy and faithfulness.

In Matthew 23:23 (NLT)

Jesus says “For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the most important aspects of the law – justice, mercy and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.”

The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians chapter 9 puts forward a case concerning the rights of full time gospel preachers to be remunerated for their ministry.

He puts forward a number of examples where individuals receive their living from the industry or activity in which they are engaged:

  • A soldier does not serve in the army at his own expense (1 Corinthians 9:7).
  • The ox is not muzzled while treading out the grain so that he can eat as much as he wants while working. (1Corinthians 9:9; 1 Timothy 5:17-18; Deuteronomy 25:4
  • The farmer should share in the harvest. (1 Corinthians 9:10; 2 Timothy 2:6)
  • Then to sum up his argument, he references the fact that just as the Levites were paid by the tithe received in the temple in the Old Covenant, the gospel preachers in the new covenant should also be paid by the tithe received. (1 Corinthians 9:13-14; Deuteronomy 18:1)
  • “In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.” (1 Corinthians 9:13-14)   The phrase “in the same way” relates directly to the tithe being used to remunerate gospel preachers in the same way that the Levites were remunerated by the tithe.

Generous Giving

But what about expenses in church activities and ministries other than staff remuneration?

Generous giving over and above the fundamental tithe provides the answer.

A church that is healthy will have a significant percentage of people who both tithe and who also give generously over and above the tithe.

Launching a Challenge

 At Spires Life Church, we are about to launch an initiative called THE 90 DAY TITHE CHALLENGE as outlined by Wealth with Purpose.

This launch will take place on Sunday 22nd July.

Overflowing Blessings

Fundamental to this 90 DAY TITHE CHALLENGE are these two things:

  1. While obviously any church is financially blessed that has numerous members who are tithers,
the premise of this initiative is not about the church being blessed, but about the individual tither being abundantly blessed financially and in many other ways. 
        2. The initiative is based on God’s challenge to His people, as outlined in Malachi 3:10-11, to take the plunge and test Him to see that He will indeed bless them:

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and thereby put me to the test,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear,” says the Lord of hosts.

(Malachi 3:10-11 RSV)

God asks us to take the risk in testing Him by tithing. In other words, He knows that sometimes we struggle to pay all the bills and balance the budget, and humanly speaking, we may think, “if I give ten percent of my salary to God, how in the wide world am I going to balance the budget when I already have no margin?” And God hears our thoughts and says to us, “Why don’t you test my promise to pour out an overflowing blessing into your lap?” And the only way you will receive the blessing is to take the risk, test God and His promise by letting go of the tithe; a tenth of your salary to Him.

Many in this church, including Lara and myself, have been living according to the promise of God in Malachi, and have been tithing for decades, and testify to the validity of God’s promise of blessing.

Leaning on God and His Promises

THE 90 DAY TITHE CHALLENGE is an opportunity for those who have never consistently given a tenth of their income to God through the local church, to begin to do so.

The church will hold your tithe for you, and if at the end of the 90 days, you cannot say that God has been faithful to His challenge in Malachi 3:10-11, then your tithe during that period will be refunded to you. We believe, however, that at the end of the 90 days, you will declare and testify, that indeed, God has been faithful to His promise of blessing you.

This is a call to trust God and lean on Him and His promises:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

(Proverbs 3:6-10 NIV)


Vision Builders

Commencing soon as an exciting initiative at

Spires Life Church.

Over the next several months, culminating at our annual Partnership Celebration in October, you will be hearing much more about this.

But to begin the conversation, a Vision Builders initiative (or ministry) is just an idea without individuals who delight in being part of a God given vision to build for Him, by first exploring, and then committing to being a Vision Builder.

So, what is the heart of a VISION BUILDER?


The heart of a VISION BUILDER is:

  • One who willingly accepts and surrenders to every challenge the Lord sets before them, with full assurance and confidence that the Lord’s plans are for well-being, prosperity and the good of humanity. (“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11)
  • One who asks, “Lord, what can I do for you?” (Acts 22:10)
  • One who declares, “Lord, here am I, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8)
  • One who obeys and goes, when called by the Lord, even though he is unsure of where he is going, (Hebrews 11:8)
  • One who resonates with the spirit, “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
  • One who is not afraid to ask God. (James 4:2; Matthew 7:7-8)

God is looking for people to team up with others with this heart to become a VISION BUILDING team.

God has positioned Spires Life Church right where we are for such a time as this; and He has placed and planted you in this faith community called Spires Life Church to be part of what He is doing to impact this community and beyond.

Some thoughts on “A positive volunteer culture in your church.”

  1. If VOLUNTEERING is thought of as a burden put upon you by staff or leaders, it will bring no blessing to the individual or your church. If volunteering is thought of as a privileged opportunity given by God with vision, mission and ministry fulfillment, it will bring blessing to the individual and to the church.


  1. PSALM 110:3 (NKJ) “Your people shall be volunteers.” PSALM 110:3 (NIV) “Your troops shall be willing on you day of battle.” The two translations of this verse give a picture of the volunteer taking the stance of a soldier on duty, being willing to stay at his post on duty.


  1. HONOURING VOLUNTEERS: We do “Volunteers of the Month” publicly after our service in the café with a “speech” and gift vouchers. We try to keep a good mix of age, gender, department, long term in the church, shorter term in the church. We keep a list, so that over a 24 month period, many volunteers will be represented.


  1. “We are a staff led church that equips and releases volunteers to do the ministry.” (Steve Hall – Kalamunda Church of Christ)




  1. A time to thank volunteers and celebrate with them.
  2. A time to train and equip.
  3. An atmosphere that is encouraging, invigorating and motivating. You will get something from the gathering that you won’t get from the notes or DVD or Youtube presentation. ‘Taught & Caught’
  4. The commitment of other volunteers will lift all volunteers.
  5. The volunteers will catch the idea of a team of fellow labourers with Christ.
  6. The opportunity to refresh vision and clarify strategy as people get on the same page again: “vision needs to be recast every 26 days) (Rick Warren on the “Nehemiah Principle.”)
  • Project achievement.
  • How people have been helped.
  • Stories that ignite confidence.
                    8. CUSTOMISED TRAINING & EQUIPPING: Both skills training and attitudinal training.
                      Attitudinal training is generic (the same for everyone); skills training is customized to the specific                            role in which the volunteers serve.
  • We do Connect Group Leaders (facilitators) Seminars separate to other volunteer seminars.
  • Leaders of volunteer teams need not just “at the coal face” skills, but training on how to motivate people, organize rosters (Elvanto), and build team morale. (Departmental leaders require a different skill set and therefore need different training! They need to develop skills and expertise in solving more complex problems and dealing generally with strategic issues.)
  • Michael E Gerber, in his book The E-Myth, writes about the leader of a business or organization needing to work on his business, not just in it. The same holds true for the leader of a volunteer team.
                      9. ATTITUDINAL TRAINING: we all need this: positive attitudes, spiritual maturity in dealing with                            obstacles and difficult situations and people. We need to develop in humility, kindness, faithfulness,                        optimism, hospitality, discipline, love, integrity and dedication and commitment. (Philippians 4:8;                            Galatians 5:22-26; Proverbs 23:7 MKJ)
